UKMERGĖ

UKMERGĖ DISTRICT. Ukmergė is often called the largest crossroad of Lithuania.  Two important international roads cross here. Even four major Lithuanian cities - Vilnius (78 km), Kaunas (69 km), Panevėžys (71 km) and Utena (64 km) are situated close to the town. Ukmergė district borders on Anykščiai, Panevėžys, Kėdainiai, Jonava, Širvintos and Molėtai districts. Such convenient geographical position determines possibilities for business expansion, rapid development of leisure and tourism services. On 1 January 2010 there were 44 792 residents in Ukmergė district, including 26 974 town residents. Today Ukmergė is proud of 13 remarkable mounds, 10 reserves, and a lot of monuments of historical and cultural heritage. The picturesque old town of Ukmergė is one of the oldest ones in Lithuania.

 

 

All region is surrounded by immpresive mounds and each of them has their own legend and uniqueness.

Legends interlaced together with historical facts mention us the old name of Ukmerge which at that time was identified as "Vilkmerge"

 In Ukmerge surroundings there occured two historically important battles: in 1435 there occured Pabaiskas battle and in 1812 Deltuva battle. Nowadays a roleplaying of these battles could be seen in Ukmerge region.

Ukmerge district also could proud of its manors which are comfortably located around the region and usually attracts tourists becouse of its majesty and historical  past.

While beeing in a great crossroad Ukmerge town had experienced the influence of various cultures.  The most significant was Jewish culture. Untill terrible German genocide took place in Ukmerge town  more than a half citixens in town were jewish.

 Ukmergė town was burned up several times and the last conflagration that appeared in 1877 had ruined almost all wooden builings of Ukmerge town. After that there faced a new brick buildings which still remained and became picturesque old town.

Vkmergės krašte daug gamtos grožybių ir išdaigų. Štai Veprių miestelis - įsikūręs didžiausio Lietuvoje meteoritinio kraterio duobėje. Į šią vietą kadaise trenkėsi didžiulis asteroidas, palikdamas 8 km skersmens įmušimą žemėje. Netoliese įsitaisęs vienas didžiausių riedulių Lietuvoje - akmuo Mokas. Plaukiant vandens turistų pamėgtąja Šventosios upe, ties Zujų miesteliu pakeri statūs, kone 4 m aukščio krantai, didingai rymantys ir žaismingai atsispindintys srovėje. 
Venąsias Aukštaitijos regiono virtuvės paslaptis Ukmergės rajone puoselėja Petronių kaimo bendruomenės amatų namai, kuriuose apsilankius galima paskanauti būtent tai, ką ant stalo tiekdavo mūsų senoliai, be to, čia galite ir patys išmokti kepti duoną, spausti sūrį. UAB "Geras skonis" garsėja mėsos gaminiais, paruoštais pagal kulinarinio paveldo receptūrą. "Kurėnų užeiga" kviečia paragauti senovinės receptūros patiekalų, kurie tiekiami moliniuose induose, kad ilgiau išliktų karšti.

Vžsukę į Ukmergę kovo mėnesį, smagiai pašėlsite tarptautiniame būgnų ir perkusijos festivalyje. Pavasario pabaigoje pakliūsite į miesto šventės šurmulį. Kiekvieną pavasarį tarptautinis kamerinių teatrų festivalis "Camera Obscura" kviečia teatro mėgėjus. Gruodį šilumos ir malonių įspūdžių pasisemsite respublikinėje kamerinių ir vokalinių ansamblių šventėje - konkurse "Šventosios gaida".
